In 2018, the recreational use of cannabis for adults was legalized throughout the state of California. While it is legal under state law for adults to purchase and use marijuana, there are still ways in which a person could face criminal charges related to the drug. For example, an individual is only permitted to possess up to one ounce of cannabis or eight grams of concentrate. A person may also grow as many as six cannabis plants for personal use. Exceeding these amounts could lead to misdemeanor charges, and a conviction could result in up to six months in jail and fines of up to $500. For those under the age of 21, possession of any amount of marijuana could have criminal consequences. It is also against the law to consume cannabis in certain areas and to sell marijuana without the proper licensing.
